There’s a new special at Mansion Avenue School. It’s called the Library. It may sound boring at first, but trust me, it's awesome!
We learn a bunch of astonishing things about many books. For example, we are learning the attributes of a book such as the title and bibliography. Also, we have learned that the summary on the cover is called a blurb. I know you may think that is a very funny name but it’s very useful. A blurb tells us what the main points of the text are and leaves us with a cliffhanger which adds more suspense.
We learned that our new Library teacher, Mrs. Szymanski, once worked at our high school for 11 years as a math teacher. She says that she loves her job and likes being with more students this year. She hopes to teach us how to use the library to find a variety of different sources of information, how to properly cite sources within a paper and at the end of a paper, how to find recreational reading items that are enjoyable and age appropriate, and hopes to be able to supplement some of the information students are learning in their academic classes.
Our principal, Mrs. Smeltzer, added this special because with our six day schedule she wanted to make a seventh special. Since she got the opportunity to add it, she thought it would be a good learning experience for us. I agree with Mrs. Smeltzer one hundred percent.
My classmates like that Library is more teaching about books than just going and picking out books. They recommended some improvements such as not learning things we already may learn in ELA. My teacher, Mr. Rehn, thinks that Library is teaching us important skills we need. He suggested that teaching us how to find our sources of information should be added. My ELA teacher, Mrs. McFetridge, likes that library is giving us good guidance about picking our books. She also likes that we are learning the attributes of a book. An improvement she would like to see is learning about text features and thinks it would be nice if they did some read alouds of books.
In my opinion, Library is a good addition to our school’s education. It will help us understand the text we are reading and make us better readers.
